‘Tis the season…

… to be jolly.

Or not as the case may be.

There’s a lot of pressure on people this time of year.

Social engagements, family commitments, pressure to buy presents, food to prepare etc.

For many people ’tis not a jolly time at all.

I came across yet another acronym this week…

JOMO.

You’re probably aware of FOMO – the fear of missing out?

Well this is the opposite.

It’s the joy of missing out.

I know, I had to think about it for a moment.

But it’s a really clever concept.

To actually say ‘no’.

To intentionally miss out on something.

By choice.

As a form of self care.

You might think how is missing out on something caring for myself?

But, particulary at this time of year, when you’re often expected to attend everyone’s drinks, or gatherings…

It’s a way of giving yourself… your mind and body… a break.

It might be saying no to an event…

Or maybe disconnecting from social media for a while.

Just giving yourself some ‘time off’.

Maybe read a book.

Listen to some music.

If you’re not in the heat of Queensland… have a long, hot soak in a bath.

If you are in the heat of Queensland… maybe have a cool bath, or go for a swim!

Go for a mindful walk, silent walking.

Listen to a guided meditation.

Anything that allows you to have some quiet, alone time.

A sort of reset before the next event you perhaps can’t avoid.

According to Psychology Today:

JOMO is the emotionally intelligent antidote to FOMO and is essentially about being present and being content with where you are at in life.

Or as the Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials puts it:

Think of JOMO as FOMO’s chill distant cousin. It’s the ability to focus on doing what truly makes you happy. That doesn’t mean you sit home alone with no social life. It means you’re selective with what you do without worrying about what others are doing.

The benefits of JOMO can include:

  • reducing stress
  • appreciating the good things in your life
  • improving your self-esteem without focusing on keeping up with others
  • focusing on things that are meaningful to you
  • mental wellbeing

Prioritising you, and letting go of comparison.

It’s a big ask in a world where we’re expected to be ‘on’ all the time.

But believe me, you are worth it.

‘Tis the season to find your JOMO…

Ann 🙏
