Happy Blursday to you…

‘What day is it?’

Have you reached that point yet?

It seems especially common in this period after Christmas and before the new year.

My husband found a funny sketch by British comedian Michael McIntyre on this exact topic.

He ‘blames’ the fact that we stop saying Monday, Tuesday etc. and have other names for days such as Christmas Day, Boxing Day etc…

To the point you have no idea what day it actually is…

Just a few hours after playing me that sketch, my husband asked me what day it was…

We both just burst into fits of laughter.

Are the shops open?

Do we need to put the bins out?

To be honest, it happens just about any time I’m on holiday, or I break with my usual routine.

For example, I ususally write my blog on a Wednesday so writing it today will completely throw me out!

Last week my husband worked from home on Christmas Eve (Wednesday), and we knew it would confuse us as usually he only works from home on Mondays and Fridays.

Christmas Day immediately became Saturday to us.

I came across a great word for this confusion of days…

Blursday…

As one day blurs into another.

There’s nothing that really distinguishes one day from another.

Apparently blursday was first coined in the late naughties (2005-2010).

But it became popularised during the COVID-19 pandemic, when we were all under lockdowns and/or working from home.

According to linguist David Crystal, it’s what’s called a blend.

Two words combine to make a new word.

It’s part of the reason when we go on our driving holidays, and we’re moving from one location to another, I always keep an itinerary handy.

Another word I came across today is Whensday…

Then I thought Chooseday could also work!

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with not knowing what day it is…

The more important thing is to enjoy each day.

Or at least take some time each day to notice what’s happening around you.

Taking some mindful moments.

Yesterday we went for a drive to find a lookout we’d recently seen a sign for, but hadn’t had the time to stop at on that occasion.

We found it, and while it was a lovely, quiet location, the actual view wasn’t quite what we’d thought/hoped for/expected.

Lookout overlooking trees

But the drive to and from it let us explore new locations…

And see lots of beautiful views.

We actually meant to take a different route but missed a turn somewhere…

But then we spotted some teddy bears…

And an old church…

Six photos of views, teddy bears by a fence, an old church

It was a wonderful day.

Whatever day it was!

Actually the washing machine is going, so I know it must be Monday today…

But give me a couple of days… New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day…

I bet I’ll be back in Blursday!

Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year…

Ann 🙏
